LEICHHARDT, Ludwig (1813-1848). Journal of an Overland Expedition in Australia, From Moreton Bay to Port Essington, A Distance of Upwards of 3000 Miles, During the Years 1844-1845 . London: T. & W. Boone, 1847.
LEICHHARDT, Ludwig (1813-1848). Journal of an Overland Expedition in Australia, From Moreton Bay to Port Essington, A Distance of Upwards of 3000 Miles, During the Years 1844-1845 . London: T. & W. Boone, 1847. 8 o (222 x 142 mm). Frontispiece and 6 lithographed plates (one folding) (some occasional spotting). Original olive-green cloth, covers and spine decorated in blind, gilt-lettered on spine (spine slightly faded, some light wear at spine ends and extremities). Provenance : Algernon Charles Heber Percy, Hotnet Hall (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. Leichhardt arrived in Sydney in 1841 equipped to study the natural history of Australia, but after two small expeditions, he became frustrated by the lack of government support for exploration in the country. He therefore organized his own ramshackle party which, between 1844 and 1845, trekked nearly 3000 miles between Jimbone in the Darling Downs and Port Essington, on the north coast of Arnhem Land, by way of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Leichhardt returned to Sydney in 1846 as the leader of the longest Australian exploration to date and was met with an enthusiastic welcome, a government reward, money from an adoring public, and honors from the geographical societies of London and Paris. Using his reward money, Leichhardt set off again in 1848, and last seen on April 3rd at Cogoon, still in the Darling Downs, his party disappeared without a trace. Numerous rescue expeditions were sent to search for the missing men in the 1850s and 1860s, but the fate of Leichhardt and his party was never determined. Abbey Travel 579; Ferguson 4571; Wantrup 138a.
