Title: Les Amours Pastorales de Daphnis et Chloe Author: Longus Place: Chelsea Publisher: The Ashendene Press Date: 1933 Description: [4], iv, 163 pp. Text printed in red, and black, initials by hand in blue. 26 wood engravings by Gwendolen Raverat (4to) original vellum-backed and tipped blue boards, front cover stamped in gilt, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, patterned slipcase. Housed in a custom folding chemise and brown morocco-backed slipcase, slipcase spine lettered in gilt. One of 290 copies on paper from a total edition of 310 copies (20 on vellum). Considered to be Gwen Raverat's finest illustrations which represent, in Colin Franklin's opinion, "the only worthwhile original illustrations in an Ashendene book". Ashendene Bibliography 39. Bookplate of the "House of Belt", other leather label with CKC monogram. Lot Amendments Condition: Offset from leather label on endpaper; otherwise a fine copy. Item number: 246650
