Wrights, California, now a nearly invisible ghost town in the Santa Cruz mountains, was once a railroad stop, with a small population of agricultural workers. 30 Chinese workers had been killed there in an explosion while building a tunnel from Santa Clara. Protecting Chinese immigrants was apparently not considered as compelling as protecting horses from abuse.
