Letter signed (“Chardin”), to Thomas Pitt Governor of Fort St George, and Daniel Chardin, merchant, concerning goods invoiced upon the Benjamin and Sidney, sympathising with them over the loss of a third, and discussing his order (“...Wee doubt not but before this you have heard that the Parliament Layed a dutye of 15% upon all wrought Silks Muslins & stained Callicoes from India...”), address leaf (delivered to Fort St George per Capt Hudson), contemporary docket, seal, guard, minor wear and repairs at folds, London, 30 November 1700 Sir John Chardin, traveller and court jeweller to Charles II, published his Journal du voyage du Chevalier Chardin en Perse et aux Indes Orientales in 1686, the rest of his travels appearing posthumously: “Chardin´s style of writing is simple and graphic; and he gives a faithful account of what he saw and heard. Montesquieu, Rousseau, Gibbon, and Helvetius acknowledge the value of his writings; and Sir William Jones says he gave the best account of Mahometan nations ever published” (Dictionary of National Biography). We can find no record of a letter by him having appeared for sale.
