Jefferson's message to Congress contains notice of Lewis and Clark: "A state of our progress in exploring the principal rivers of that country, and of the information respecting them hitherto obtained, will be communicated so soon as we shall receive some further relations which we have reason shortly to expect" Lewis's letter was published with Jefferson's State of the Union on 2 February 1806 (see following newspaper printing). "Captain Lewis. To the Senate and House of Representatives of the U. States... Feb. 19 1806." In: The Repertory . Vol. III, no. 19. Boston, Friday 7 March 1806. Folio. Bifolium.
