Contemporary wrappers, UNCUT AND UNOPENED (reinforced on verso, with later spine); quarter calf slipcase. FIRST EDITION, IN FINE, UNCUT AND UNOPENED CONDITION. The act, printed here in its final approved form, directs the Secretary of War to issue land warrants to Lewis and Clark in the amount of one thousand six hundred acres each. Their companions, including John Ordway, Patrick Gass and John Colter are to receive 220 acres each. The list of expedition members, totaling 31 names, is among the very first printed lists recording those who accompanied Lewis and Clark (see also lot 45). The second section of the act states that double pay is to be given to them "and that the sum of eleven thousand dollars be and the same hereby is appropriated to discharge the same, out of monies in the treasury not otherwise appropriated. Nathaniel Macon, Speaker of the House of Representatives and S. Smith President of the Senate, pro tempore, sign the act (in pint) at end. The act was approved by President Jefferson on 3 March 1807.
