Contemporary quarter calf, spine gilt-ruled in seven compartments, gilt-lettered morocco label in one, marbled boards (extremities scuffed, label missing from volume 2). Provenance : Volume one: S. Sansom (signature and gift inscription to his cousin); Mary Curtis; Mr. John S. Curtis (signature). Volume 2: S. Sansom (gift inscription to); Catherine Sykes; unidentified blind library stamp with monogram 'CG' on a draft letter to 'Messrs. Editors' loosely inserted. "THE FIRST SUBSTANTIVE ACCOUNT OF THE LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION" (Wagner-Camp-Becker). Reprinting Clark's famous letter to his brother dated St. Louis 23rd September 1806 (Volume 2, No. 45, November 8th, 1806, p. 359-360) announcing the success of their expedition: "In returning through those [Rocky] mountains . . . to explore the country, and discover the most practicable route which does exist across the continent by the way of the Missouri and Columbia rivers; in this we were completely successful, and have therefore no hesitation in declaring, that such as nature has permitted, we have discovered the best route which does exist across the continent of North America in that direction." First published in the Frankfort Palladium , October 9th, 1806. Extracts of the popular Message from the President are also reprinted in Volume 2, No. 28, 1806.
