LEWIS, Henry (c.1819-1904). Das illustrirte Mississippithal, dargestellt in 80 nach der Natur aufgenommenen Ansichten von Wasserfalle zu St. Anthony an bis zum Golf von Mexico . Dsseldorf: C.H. Mller in Aachen for Arnz & Co., [1854-58]. Small 2° (272 x 176mm). Tinted pictorial lithographic title, letterpress title, and 77 (of 78, as issued, see below) lithographic plates, including one folding, after Lewis, one woodcut text illustration. (A few small, discreetly repaired marginal tears, light spotting in about 5 plates, faint browning.) Modern green morocco, title lettered in gilt on spine. Provenance : Clara Voss (19th-century inscription on flyleaf). FIRST EDITION of what Streeter considered 'THE GREAT EARLY COLOR PLATE BOOK OF THE MISSISSIPPI REGION'. Lewis's fine views include St. Louis, St. Paul, Dubuquc, Vicksburg, Natchez, Baton Rouge and many scenes of native American life. The work was originally published in 20 parts, with an English edition also planned (hence the German-English captions on about 34 plates) but never realised. The present copy has page 72 in its first state, without the text describing 'Das Medizinflaschendorf' and without the plate illustrating it. Sabin apparently never saw a copy of the work, and, despite having transcribed the title-page, calls for only 24 plates. 'ONE OF A HALF-DOZEN GREAT AND RARE ILLUSTRATED BOOKS RELATING TO NORTH AMERICA' (Graff/Storm). Howes USiana L-312; Sabin 40807; Streeter sale 3, 1547.
