[Astronauts] Library of Astronaut Signed Books and Photographs. 1960s/2010s. An extraordinary collection of autographs that includes signatures of all twelve astronauts who have walked on the moon, the first American woman in space, the first African-American woman in space, and other notable astronauts. Includes an official NASA photograph taken by Neil Armstrong and signed by Armstrong in the lower left corner, an iconic image showing Buzz Aldrin descending the ladder of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module on July 20, 1969, as he and Armstrong became the first people to land on the Moon, framed and matted to an overall size of 18 x 15” (sight 9 ½ x 7”). Autographs of the other eleven astronauts who have walked on the moon are also present, some in duplicate, comprising: Buzz Aldrin (three books signed: Magnificent Desolation [two different printings, with a bookmark and color photo from the signing events] and Welcome to Mars); Charles “Pete” Conrad (a signed check, together with Rocketman, signed by Nancy Conrad); Alan Bean (Apollo, signed bookplate); Charles Duke (Moonwalker); Alan Shepard (Moon Shot, signed bookplate); Edgar Mitchell (The Way of the Explorer); David Scott (Two Sides of the Moon); James B. Irwin (More than Earthlings); John Young (signed and inscribed official NASA photo); Harrison Schmitt (Return to the Moon); and Eugene Cernan (The Last Man on the Moon). With an additional 24 signed volumes on various Apollo and other space exploration missions (signers noted parenthetically), comprising: John Glenn (three books signed: This New Ocean, We Seven, and John Glenn: A Memoir); two copies of Lost Moon (one signed by Jim Lovell and Fred Haise, the other by Lovell); Schirra’s Space (Wally Schirra, signed bookplate); Liftoff (Michael Collins ; The Orbital Perspective (Ron Garan); High Calling (Evelyn Husband Thompson, with signed note); Find Where the Wind Goes (Mae Jemison); First Man (James Hansen ; Endurance (Scott Kelly); Silver Linings (June Rodgers, signed with a signed notecard); Failure is Not an Option (Gene Kranz, signed bookplate); Riding Rockets (Mike Mullane); Sky Walking (Tom Jones); Off the Planet (Jerry Linenger); Falling to Earth (Al Worden and Francis French); Spacewalker (Jerry Ross); Forever Young (James Hansen ; Mission (Bill Nelson ; To Space & Back (Sally Ride); Missao Cumprida (Marcos Pontes); and Mousetronaut (Mark Kelly). And five other items: Gus Grissom-John Young autopen NASA letter (1965), with mailing cover; Garrett Reisman signed astronaut photo; Barbara Morgan signed postcard; Walt Cunningham signed card; and a National Geographic magazine signed on the cover by Peggy Whitson. Altogether, 37 signed books (4to or 8vo), one signed magazine, three signed photographs, two signed cards, one autopen letter, eight unsigned books, and nine newspapers: the July 19—25, 1969 issues of the Boston Herald Traveler whose front pages are devoted to the Moon landing. From a single collection, in excellent overall condition, most of the signed volumes fine in like jackets under Mylar. Many of the volumes were signed from mailed requests for autographs, and bear inscriptions to the former owner or his daughters, and accompanying the lot is a stack of original mailing envelopes in which the items were sent.
