AN UNUSUALLY RARE TRIPLE SIGNATURE Lincoln tries very hard to get Capt. Symmes Gardner into the Quartermaster Corps: "Capt. Symmes Gardner," he tells Stanton, "was nominated to the Senate as Assistant Quartermaster, and rejected. My impression is that I directed his renomination, on information from Senators, that the rejection probably resulted from mistake. If there be such direction of mine on file, please send me the renomination at once." Adjutant General, Lorenzo Thomas's endorsement on the verso explains "There is now no Quartermaster Department to which he can be re-nominated." Above this, Lincoln writes on 11 December 1862: "If Gen. Meigs will say in writing that this re-nomination may properly be made, I will do it." Evidently that was not enough, for four days later Lincoln adds another endorsement on the recto: "If there is a vacancy of Asst Qr. M. not already promised, let Capt. Gardner have it." He never got it. Gardner was mustered out of the 18th Infantry regiment in December 1863. Published in Basler 5:217.
