LINCOLN, Abraham. Autograph letter signed ("A. Lincoln"), as President, to Simon Cameron, Washington, D. C., 14 August 1861. 1 page, 840 , WITH CAMERON'S AUTOGRAPH ENDORSEMENT SIGNED ("Approved, S. C."), below Lincoln's letter (Cameron's endorsement smudged). A TEXAN IN THE UNION CAUSE. Lincoln requests, and Secretary of War Cameron approves, the appointment of three men as Paymaster of Volunteers. One of them, however, is from the Confederate state of Texas: "Let John A. Lowry of Indiana, Henry V. Sullivan, of Illinois, and Ira L. Hewitt of Texas, be appointed Paymasters of Volunteers." Beneath Lincoln's signature Cameron has written: "Approved, S. C." Hewitt (1818-1862), a native New Yorker, became a judge in San Antonio and sided with the state's Unionists during the Secession crisis. He died on active duty in October 1862.
