LINCOLN, Abraham]. BERGER, Anthony, photographer . Carte-de-visite portrait photograph signed ("A. Lincoln") as President, taken at Mathew Brady's Gallery, Washington, D.C., 9 February 1864. Hamilton and Ostendorf, Lincoln in Photographs , O-91 (vignetted version). With Charles Hamilton signed certification. Albumen photograph, mounted on card, neatly trimmed to the edges of the print,, even age-toning . Verso with interesting contemporary ink inscription (partly cropped away): "[The President's photograph] was procured for L.E. Sle[??] by Wm. Slade, confidential messenger to his Excellency. March 25th 1865." PROBABLY ONE OF THE LAST PHOTOGRAPHS SIGNED BY THE PRESIDENT, THREE WEEKS BEFORE HIS UNTIMELY DEATH While Lincoln obligingly affixed his signature to a significant number of carte-de-visite photographs while President, he is not known to have dated any of these. The present example, with a particularly large, clear signature, is unusual in that it carries an inscription on the verso--probably by the original owner--that specifies that it was signed on 25 March 1865, only three weeks before Lincoln's death at the hands of an assassin. The classic Lincoln signature on this carte closely matches that on the finest signed carte we have handled (Hamilton and Ostendorf O-87, Christie's, 9 June 1999, lot 233, $85,000)
