In a single sitting on 9 February 1864, Berger took two remarkable images of Lincoln: the famous "penny profile" portrait and this seated picture. In it, Lincoln appears attentive but remarkably relaxed, without the stiffness noticeable in some studio portraits. Several decades after his father's death, Robert Todd Lincoln, in correspondence with the early Lincon photograph collector Meserve, wrote "I have always though the Brady photograph of my father [the present image] to be the most satisfactory likeness of him" (Hamilton & Ostendorf, p.176).
