Property from the Eric C. Caren Collection(LINCOLN, ABRAHAM)Broadside report pf President Lincoln's Assassination, with other news and rumors about the plot and the end of the Civil War, in The Pittsburgh Commercial, Vol. II, No. 185. Pittsburgh: Brigham & Thompson, Saturday morning, April 15, 1865 Broadside newspaper Extra (27 x 20 1/4 in.; 685 x 515 mm) on wove paper, text in eight columns with black mourning rules; some creasing, light staining, and short tears, chip to right margin costing a few letters. The consignor has independently obtained a letter of authenticity from PSA that will accompany the lot. An early and rare newspaper broadside account of Lincoln's assassination, issued the day of his death and reflecting the confusion and uncertainty surrounding the event. Under the headlines "EXTRA | Assassination. | A Fiendish Plot. | Shooting of Pres't.Lincoln. | He Will Probably Die. | Stabbing of Secretary Seward," the lengthy special telegraph dispatch sent to the offices of the Commercial from Washington provides a fairly accurate account of the facts of the assassination as they were initially understood. Further details were added as they came in from other sources—one of which noted that it was "exceedingly difficult to obtain facts"—including erroneous reports headlined "Mr Seward Dead" and "Booth Caught!" The former story was corrected by a "2ND EXTRA" dispatch: "Sec. Seward's Death Contradicted." The issue also includes extensive coverage of Robert E. Lee's surrender to Ulysses Grant, but Lincoln's death, and the righteous anger it invoked, is the predominant theme of the paper, as demonstrated by a bitter editorial: "Long after the hour of midnight the awful news reached us that the President of the United States, and Secretary Seward have been assassinated by unknown desperadoes. At this juncture (when our most generous of Presidents, (for no more merciful man than Abraham Lincoln ever occupied the highest pinnacle of Republican dignity,)had been studying out a plan of mercy to the rebels who have sought to ruin the best government known to civilization, some desperate scoundrels have wormed their way into the capital of Earth's greatest nation, and sought to appease the godlessness of slavery by taking the lives of two of America's citizens. … Let the people say what shall be done with rebel leaders now! Let us now hear what amnesty means!"Condition ReportCondition as described in catalogue entry. The lot is sold in the condition it is in at the time of sale. The
