LINCOLN, Abraham. Engraved document boldly signed ("Abraham Lincoln") as President, countersigned by Secretary of Navy Gideon Welles, Washington, D.C., 12 March 1863. 1 page, large folio , PRINTED ON PARCHMENT, an elaborately engraved military commission, with American Eagle at top center, standing astride a harpoon, with the bold heading below: "Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States of America." A red paper seal at bottom, along with a large vignette of Poseidon and his sea-horse drawn carriage, and other naval imagery. Small legend at bottom: "American Bank Note Co., New York." A Navy Department docketing inscription appears in lower left corner. Matted and in a fine quality archival frame. A LINCOLN NAVAL COMMISSION Lincoln's Naval commission are quite considerably rarer that the relatively numerous Army appointments. Here, President Lincoln and Secretary Welles appoint William W. McKean Commodore in the Navy, on the Retired List, from 16 July 1862. After enlisting as a midshipman at age 14, McKean served in the Mediterranean, the West Indies, and off the Coast of South America, before commanding a vessel of his own in the Mexican War. He received this final promotion to Commodore after illness compelled his retirement in 1862.
