Engraved document signed ("Abraham Lincoln") as President, countersigned by Secretary of War Simon Cameron, Washington, D.C., 9 September 1861. 1 page, folio, PRINTED ON PARCHMENT, elaborately engraved, bold heading at top "The President of the United States of America," beneath which an American Eagle and the "E Pluribus Unum" motto fly above billowing clouds, at bottom a large vignette of crossed flags, cannon and other military paraphernalia, with small legend "Engraved by J.V.N. and C.H. Throop, Washn. City," blue paper seal, accomplished in manuscript, Cameron's signature pale , otherwise fine. Lincoln appoints George B. Sanford "Second Lieutenant in the First Regiment of Dragoons." Military commissions carrying the countersignature of Simon Cameron are much less common than others signed by Lincoln since Cameron was only Secretary of War until early 1862. The 1st Dragoon Regiment was renamed the 1st United States Cavalry shortly after the war began.
