Sanford "Captain of the First Regiment of Cavalry." Sanford began the war as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st United States Cavalry, was brevetted a major for gallant service at the Battle of Cedar Creek (19 October 1864) and ended the war with a brevet promotion to Lt. Colonel.
