LINCOLN, ABRAHAM, President. Document signed in full as President, countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, Washington, D.C., 11 March 1862. One page, large folio, ON VELLUM, original blue papered seal at top left-hand corner, small silk ribbons attached at each corner. An attractively engraved appointment accomplished in manuscript, headed "The President of the United States of America," over a large vignette of an American eagle; at the bottom of the page is a large vignette of crossed flags, cannons and military equipment, with legend: "engraved by J.V.N. and V.H.Throop," appointing William M. Smith an additional paymaster of Volunteers. Provenance : 1. General William MacAllister Smith ( - ) enjoyed a distinguished military career which culminated in his appointment in 1890 as Paymaster General of the Army.
