An attractively engraved appointment accomplished in manuscript, headed "The President of the United States of America," over a large vignette of an American eagle; at the bottom of the page is a large vignette of crossed flags, cannons and military equipment, with legend: "engraved by J.V.N. and V.H.Throop," appointing William M. Smith an additional paymaster of Volunteers. Provenance : 1. General William MacAllister Smith ( - ) enjoyed a distinguished military career which culminated in his appointment in 1890 as Paymaster General of the Army.
