LINCOLN, Abraham, President . Engraved document signed ("Abraham Lincoln") as President, countersigned by Secretary of State William H. Seward, Washington, D.C., 20 October 1864. 1 page, oblong folio (13¾ x 19 5/8 in.), bold italic heading "Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States...," large papered Great Seal of the U.S. (Eagle and banner "e pluribus unum"), text added in a clear clerical hand, slight browning to extreme margins of the sheet, but in excellent condition for this type of document. A FINE CONSULAR APPOINTMENT. Just a few weeks before his second inauguration, President Lincoln and the Secretary of State confirm the appointment of Carl F. Adae of Cincinnati as "Consul at Frankfurt-am-Main, for the states of Ohio and Indiana." Adae is to be recognized and allowed "such functions, powers and privileges as are allowed to Consuls by the Law of Nations or by the Laws of the United States."
