LINCOLN, ABRAHAM, President . Engraved document signed ("Abraham Lincoln") as President, countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles, Washington, D.C., 1 April 1862. 1 page, folio, 475 x 365 mm. (19 x 14 1/2 in.), PRINTED ON FINE PARCHMENT, papered seal of the United States at lower center, matted and glazed in a giltwood frame, elaborately engraved (by the American Bank Note Company) with an American eagle perched on a rock with two sailing ships in background, large calligraphic legend "President of the United States of America," and, at bottom, a group of mermaids, tritons and winged horses above a group of crossed flags, cannons and other military paraphernalia, accomplished in manuscript. A RARE MARINE CORPS APPOINTMENT, using the same printed form as for Naval commissions. President Lincoln and Secretary Welles appoint Henry J. Bishop a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps, to serve "according to the Rules and Discipline of the Navy." Fine condition. Marine Corps appointments signed by Lincoln are extremely rare.
