Matted and framed . A LINCOLN APPOINTMENT UNDONE BY STANTON. Cameron's stewardship at the War Department was inept and possibly corrupt. His place in the Cabinet was entirely owing to a deal struck at the Republican convention in which the Pennsylvanian threw his delegates to Lincoln in return for the appointment. Frequent corruption scandals and incompetent appointments embarrassed Lincoln throughout Cameron's year in office. Within weeks of this appointment, Lincoln sent Cameron packing to the distant post of American minister to the Tsar at Moscow. In his place he named Edwin M. Stanton, a man of scrupulous honesty and fanatical determination to crush the Confederate rebellion. Stanton takes the opportunity to cancel this appointment by his predecessor, possibly so that he could install one of his own patronage clients.
