LINCOLN, MARY TODD, First Lady . Autograph letter signed ("Mary Lincoln") to her attorney, Leonard Swett, n.p. [Chicago?], 12 January 1868. 2 full pages, part of text on page 2 written across, black-bordered mourning stationery, small repair along part of one fold. "A CANE OF MY MARTRYED HUSBAND, IN THE HANDS OF A LOW COPPERHEAD!" An interesting letter from Lincoln's widow, commenting on the political fortunes of one of Abraham Lincoln's old Illinois rivals, Lyman Trumbull, also mentioning former Secretary of the Treasury Simon Cameron, Judge David Davis and a Lincoln relic: "Mr. [Lyman] Trumbull has arrived in S. [Springfield]. I fear with his smooth plausible stories -- [he] will be re-elected. As a devoted friend, of my husband's & knowing all his cold, selfish treachery towards him, can you not write to day , to influential parties in S.- and tell them, the whole truth . His past conduct to my darling husband is always fresh , in my mind. I observe that McGinn['s] name is not among the confirmations. Important persons in W. have written & questioned me about this insignificant personage yet his antecedents, had been questioned. Should Gen. Cameron be confirmed by the Senate, as he unquestionably will, will you immediately write to him? Also give me any news, when you receive letters from Judge Davis." In a lengthy postscript, Mary Lincoln adds: "I neglected to mention, in discussing the McGinness' on yesterday, that in parting Mrs. Mc insisted upon some memento of Mr. Lincoln. I asked her, what she would like - she replied ' a cane .' You may imagine my reply & secret indignation. I declined of course, and in the coldest manner -- Such profanation, a cane of my martryed husband, in the hands of a low Copperhead!" Mrs. Lincoln developed a strong dislike for Trumbull (1813-1896) when he won out over Lincoln in the 1855 competition for the Senate. Apparently unpublished, not in Mary Todd Lincoln: Her Life and Letters, ed. Turner and Turner. [ With :] [LINCOLN, MARY TODD]. INAUGURAL GOWN SWATCH. Small oblong swatch of jacquard weave fabric in sea-green and silver satin, 25 x 100mm. (1 x 3 7/8 in.) irregular , with an 1890's envelope inscribed: "Piece of the Satin gown, worn by Mrs. Lincoln at the Inauguration Ball in 1861. $27 per yard" -- TODD, ELIZA PARKER, Mother of Mary Todd Lincoln. . Autograph letter signed ("Mrs. R.S. Todd") to Miss. Elizabeth L. Humphreys [later Mary Todd's step-mother], Frankfurt, [Kentucky], 24 December 1825. 3 pp., 4to, formal expressions of friendship: "...If your feelings should prompt me to write me at...any time I hope you will not be fearful of confiding too much in me. My honor & character & affections shall be your shield.... Rare. (3)
