Blue and white map, 14¼ x 15½ in. , WITH PENCIL AND INK NOTATIONS OF RADIO FREQUENCIES BY CHARLES LINDBERGH AND ANNE MORROW LINDBERGH. A RADIO MAP, SHOWING THE EFFECTIVE RANGE OF COMMUNICATIONS FROM VARIOUS POPULATION CENTERS. A map used by the Lindberghs in the final legs of their historic "North to the Orient" journey from New York to Japan and China. There are no customary identifying markers on this unusual map: the land masses and waters lie anonymously on the printed page. Only their distinctive, readily recognizable shape identify them as Japan, Korea, and portions of China and Russia. But there are waves of lines around each of the geographical locations. Working from the latitudinal and longitudinal designations, one could guage the effective range of radio communications. Both Charles and Anne Lindbergh made notations about radio call letters and frequencies on this map: "JXF 45h.," "KHCAL sends on 3.5" Mrs. Lindbergh writes, while her husband notes "Shanghai XHJ, 40h."
