LINDSAY (NORMAN) - LANE (F.C.V.): The Bookplates of Norman Lindsay , ONE OF 25 COPIES of an edition of 400, 18 tipped-in sample bookplates (blank margins of leaves with some smoke stains),original stiff wrappers (soiled, margins smoke-stained, tail-margin and lower fore-corners frayed), 8vo, Wakefield Press, Adelaide 1944 AUTHOR'S COPY LETTERED NO.A OF 25 LETTERED A-Y, SIGNED BY NORMAN LINDSAY Of the bookplates listed, Lane's was apparently the only one which Lindsay produced in 3 states. Apart from the monochrome tipped-in example of Lane's bookplate, there is a loosely inserted coloured example along with Lane's cut signature. Frederick Claude Vivian Lane, 1880-1969, was Australia's first Olympic Swimmimg gold medallist. One of only three Australian representatives at the Paris Olympics in 1900, he won the 200m freestyle and the 200m water obstacle race. Lane became a master printer with interests in art, literature and model-building. He shared some of these interests with his friend Norman Lindsay whose paintings and literary works were also in his own collection. In 1968 a fire at his beachside house destroyed much of Lane's collectionas well as 400 of his swimming trophies
