Title: Liquor License granted to W.W. Ferguson in the settlement of Prairie Diggings, Yuba County Author: ** Place: Marysville, CA Publisher: Date: Nov. 18, 1854 Description: Partially printed, filled out in ink. On blue paper, 4x6¼. Rare ephemeral evidence of the advance of civilization in the California gold region, being the grant of a liquor license in Prairie Diggings the year of its founding. The license was granted for three months, in consideration of payment of $30. The town of Prairie Diggings (spelled "Diggins" on the license) was a settlement at the head of Prairie Creek, founded in 1854, and "enjoyed a few years of prosperity... The claims were abandoned in 1864. According to William B. Meek, a stage driver, it was considered a `hard camp' in bad repute and was also known as Hole in the Wall" - Gudde, California Gold Camps. Lot Amendments Condition: Three small cancellation holes at left, else fine. Item number: 160466
