The license was granted for three months, in consideration of payment of $30. The town of Prairie Diggings (spelled "Diggins" on the license) was a settlement at the head of Prairie Creek, founded in 1854, and "enjoyed a few years of prosperity... The claims were abandoned in 1864. According to William B. Meek, a stage driver, it was considered a `hard camp' in bad repute and was also known as Hole in the Wall" - Gudde, California Gold Camps.
