Vortigern.
London: printed for J. Barker; B. White; T. Egerton; and R. Faulder [1799], 1799. Two parts in one volume, 8vo. Half calf over marbled boards. Condition : light marginal browning to first and final leaf; joints lightly rubbed. first edition . Vortigern represents the most ambitious of Samuel Ireland's attempts at forging the writings of Shakespeare. It was in 1796 that Ireland first attempted to put Vortigern on the stage. In addition to experiencing great difficulty finding performers, Malone's damning Inquiry into the play's authenticity arose on the eve of the production. As a result of this, and of Kemble's deliberate attempt to wreck the play, the first performance dissolved into a riot of hilarity and derision. Uncommon in its correct complete state. [With:] Henry the Second . London: J. Barker, 1799. 8vo. Half calf over marbled boards. first edition . Another entirely new Shakespeare play by Ireland, this one never performed. [With:] The Confessions of William-Henry-Ireland. Containing the Particulars of His Fabrication of the Shakspeare Manuscripts… London: Ellerton & Byworth, 1805. 8vo. Frontispiece. Modern brown sheep. first edition . An attempt at taking blame and shifting it from his father. [With:] Another copy. Contemporary half calf. Lacking frontispiece.
