Beschreibung:

Lithograph with hand-coloring wove paper, 1876. 10 1/4 x 13 1/4 in. (sight), 17 3/4 x 20 3/4 in. (frame). Note: This scene depicts militiamen John Paulding, Isaac Van Wart, and David Williams searching British officer Major John Andre during the American Revolutionary War in 1780. Papers are discovered in Andre’s boot that reveal him to be plotting with Major Benedict Arnold, Commander of West Point, to turn the fort over to the British for 20,000 pounds. Andre was stopped and searched making his way south in Armonk, NY. He was eventually imprisoned at the American headquarters at Tappan after the militiamen refused to take his bribe. George Washington ordered an investigation and a trial, and an offer to trade Andre for Arnold was refused. Andre was hanged shortly after. Condition: With margins. Light- staining. Not examined out of frame.
