LITURGY]. DAILY PRAYERS, Spanish. Orden de las oraciones cotidianas. Amsterdam: [Samuel Teyxeyra Tartaz], [1723]. 8vo, modern blue morocco . With subdivisional title: Calendario de Ros Hodes fiestas y ayunos from 1722 to 1732. Issued without title (?). According to Den Boer, from the four extant copies, three are without title. Only one copy in Bibliotheca Ets Haim Livraria Montezinos is with title. Kayserling, p. 61. Den Boer, Catalogue [...] Ets Haim/Livraria Montezinos, n. 355. Not in JTS, not in the British Library. Although Prayer Books were printed in the Spanish language in Amsterdam for the use of former Marranos throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, this edition has a particular and all too revealing story. Its printer, Samuel Teyxeyra Tartaz, was son-in-law of the well-known Sephardi printer, David de Castro Tartaz. After the death of the former, David continued the printing business together with Moses Mendes Coutinho, but apparently without much success. Samuel Tartaz, who also served as hazan (cantor), and further tried to make a living as a teacher of the Spanish language, complained in the present edition of the Daily Prayerbook that he was getting old, and while he was "gaining" in years, he was not "gaining" enough income to maintain his wife and five daughters (!). In order to raise funds, he dedicated the work to the wealthy Joseph Teyxeyra, member of the important Teyxeyra familiy living in Amsterdam and Hamburg. See: Treasures from the Library Ets Haim Livraria Montezinos (Jerusalem: 1980), p. 50, no. 83.
