Lloyd's New Map of the United States the Canadas and New Brunswick From the latest Surveys showing every railroad & station finished to June 1863 .
New York: J. T. Lloyd, 1864. Massive hand-colored folding pocket map (41 x 49 ¾ inches, 1040x1265 mm). Inset of the tip of Florida. Publisher's cloth covers. Condition: Some dampstaining, some separations at folds, the map detached from the case; covers worn, endpapers renewed. This large map of the United States and southern Canada published during the Civil War depicts as far west as Fort Atkinson on the Arkansas River, with a large Indian Territory above Texas and Dacotah Territory west of Minnesota. The map shows the numerous rail lines that had been built in the 1850s which would play a major role in the execution of the war and the settlement of the West. The map, according to a note below the title, was issued colored in this format for $.50 or varnished and on rollers as a wall map for $1. Interestingly, this map includes a note above the References which cautions the buyer against a rival mapmaker named Lloyd (i.e. H. H. Lloyd) “by whose name he hopes to deceive the public with spurious 'Lloyd Maps.'” Rumsey 2591 (1863 edition).
