LOCAL HISTORY -- ISLE OF WIGHT. Collection of charters on vellum, most with seals, relating to Brook and elsewhere, mid 13th - 17th century , including grants of the abbots of Quarr Abbey, Isle of Wight, 1399, 1468, a release dated 1500, and a letter of attorney, abbot of Quarr to John Garston, 1399; grant, Johanna, of lands in Brook, lately in possession of her brother, Thomas de Glamorgan, to her grandson, John Roucle, 1392; grant, to John Walton 1518, with fine seal of Queen Catherine of Aragon, 1518; some out-county charters, including grants, Bampton, Oxon, c.1270 and Keinton Mandeville, Somerset, c.1300: 13th century (thirteen, five damaged), 14th c. (twenty-five), 15th c. (thirty-three), 16-17th c. (fifty-six); together with rentals on vellum, 15-16th century (4); and documents 18th - early 19th century (approximately 25); also, papers relating to dispute, Brook and Freshwater, with schedules of evidence, 1670's; genealogical papers relating to the family of Bowreman, Roucle and de Glamorgan; family and parochial correspondence, including two letters signed by Stephen Gardiner, Bishop of Worcester, one dated 1554 ; copy of award made by Gardiner; five autograph letters signed by Henry Carew, c. 1600; letter signed by Oriana Sacheverell to her sister, Isabel Bowreman, 1642; document relating to garrisons, Isle of Wight, 1647 (approximately 120 pieces), in one tin trunk . The last male descendant of the Bowreman Family, Revd. Thomas Bowreman, Lord of the Manor of Brook, was buried at Brook in 1844. He was descended from Thomas Bowreman (will proved 1483) who married Joanna, daughter and co-heiress of John Roucle (will dated 1452) and his wife Joanna Garston, whose grandfather, Geoffrey Roucle (died 1388), married Isabella de Glamorgan.
