Provenance : SIR ISAAC NEWTON, whose entire library was sold soon after his death in 1727 to; John Huggins (bequeathed to his son); Charles Huggins, rector of Chinnor, Oxfordshire (engraved armorial bookplate, manuscript shelfmark, the library inherited by); James Musgrave, husband of Charles Huggins' neice and successor to the rectorate of Chinnor in 1750 (engraved armorial bookplate pasted over that of Huggins); transferred after Musgrave's death in 1778 by his son to Barnsley Park in Gloucestershire (shelfmark); Viscount Mersey (Bignor Park bookplate). See also lot 624. AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY FROM SIR ISAAC NEWTON'S LIBRARY. FIRST EDITION. A posthumous collection of essays, letters, and other works including "The fundamental constitutions of Carolina", which appears to be the first attempt to create a written constitution for the colony. This copy was one of thirteen of Locke's books in Sir Isaac Newton's library, but apparently does not show any dog-eared lower corners characteristic of many of Newton's books (see lot 624).
