Beschreibung:

LORENTZ, Hendrik Antoon (1853-1928), Albert EINSTEIN (1879-1955) and Hermann MINKOWSKI (1864-1909). Das Relativitätsprinzip. Eine Sammlung von Abhandlungen . Leipzig and Berlin: B.G. Teubner, 1913. 8° (253 x 174mm). Half-tone portrait frontispiece of Minkowski after Emil Loges. Line diagrams in the text. (Lightly browned.) Original ochre printed wrappers, the inner upper wrapper and the inner and outer lower wrapper bearing publisher's advertisements, the advertisement on the inner upper wrapper with a cancellation slip pasted on, listing works in preparation by S. Bernstein, O. Blumenthal, C. Carathéordory and M. von Smoluchowsky (a few minor marks on upper wrapper, short tears on spine), uncut. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. 'A COLLECTION OF SEMINAL PAPERS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF RELATIVITY PHYSICS' (Norman). In his introduction to the volume, Otto Blumenthal states that it was conceived by A. Sommerfeld, who wished to reissue Minkowski's 'Raum und Zeit' with supplementary notes. Minkowski's paper was fundamental to relativity physics because its author 'was the first to conceive that the relativity principle formulated by Lorentz and Einstein led to the abandonment of the concept of space and time as separate entities and to their replacement by a four-dimensional ''space-time,'' of which he gave a precise definition and initiated the mathematical study; it became the frame of all later developments of the theory and led Einstein to his bolder conception of generalized relativity' ( DSB IX, p.414). To 'Raum und Zeit' Sommerfeld added the other key papers that established the principle of relativity, 'so enthält dieses Bändchen, als eine sammlung von Urkunden zur Geschichte des Relativitätsprinzips, die Entwicklung der Lorentzschen Ideen, Einsteins erste große Arbeit und Minkowskis Vortrag, mit dem die Popularität des Relativitätsprinzip einsetzt' (l. 1/2r). The papers collected in Das Relativitätsprinzip are: Lorentz's 'Der Interferenzversuch Michaelsons' (1895), 'Elektomagnetische Erscheinungen in einem System, das sich mit beliebiger, die des Lichtes nicht erreichender Geschwindigheit bewegt' (1904), and 'Das Relativitätsprinzip und seine anwendung auf einige besondere physikalische Erscheinungen' (1910); Einstein's 'Zur Elektrodynamik bewegter Körper' (1905) and 'Ist der Trägheit eines Körpers von seinem Energieinhalt abhängig?' (1905); Minkowski's 'Raum und Zeit' (1908), and A. Sommerfeld's supplementary 'Anmerkungen zu Minkowski, Raum und Zeit' (1913). Norman 1390: cf. PMM 401.
