Title: Lot of 13 volumes - all inscribed Author: James, George Wharton Place: Varioius places Publisher: Date: 1900-1910 Description: Comprises: In and Around the Grand Canyon; Indian Basketry; Indians Painted Desert Region; In and Out of the Old Missions of California; The WOnders of the Colorado Desert (2 volume set);The Story of Scraggles; What the White Race May Learn from the Indian; Through Ramona's Country; California's Birthday Book; Heroes of California; The Grand Canyon of Arizona; The Sage Brush Parson (by A.B. Ward). Various sizes and paginations. All but two uniformly bound dark in green morocco and marbled boards, spines gilt with stylized art-nouveau floral ornaments, one volume in full brown morocco, one in green and brown morocco. Every book autographed and each with a warm personal inscription to Hugo Goehle. The inscriptions almost all relate to the content of the book inscribed and were apparently given by James to one who was a good friend. George Wharton James (1858-1923) was the prolific author of books on California and the Southwest. He was an early appreciator of Native American arts and crafts and a great booster of the West. He authored four titles in the beautifully produced "See America First" series. Lot Amendments Condition: 10 volumes good to very good with varying degrees of fading or darkening to spines, some scuffing, overall quite presentable. 3 books (Indians of the Painted Desert Region; What the White Race May Learn from the Indian; and In and Around the Grand Canyon are damaged beyond repair with water damage to rear covers and mildew penetration several pages into text at rear. Inscriptions on front blank leaves are salvageable. Item number: 168299
