Beschreibung:

Lot consists of (A) Saxon miner's guild axe with a 9" blade of characteristic form including cut out cross and pierced holes with its original brass tip. Stamped indistinctly PH. Walnut shaft inlaid throughout its length with scrimshawed stag horn and bone panels depicting tulips, daisies, the crossed hammers of the guild, and Christ on the cross. CONDITION: Head is patinated. Shaft missing two pellets but otherwise intact. (B) Flask measures 10 - 1/4" overall with a hunting scene of a gentleman with bow and arrow firing at a fleeing boar. CONDITION: Good condition with some deterioration but excellent scene and original forged iron carrying rings. These axes were carried by minrs in processions when they marched throughout the city for various pageants. They are attractive and an essential piece for any collection of early European weapons.
