LOU GEHRIG AND LEO DUROCHER CORRESPONDENCE A Western Union telegram sent to Lou Gehrig at Yankee Stadium, July 4th 1939 "Lou Gehrig Day" by Brooklyn Dodger Leo Durocher and an autographed response by Lou Gehrig. The telegram reads JUST A SLIGHT TEN YEARS AGO, A FRESH ROOKIE YOU DID KNOW, A FELLOW WITH ALWAYS LOTS TO SAY, BUT NEVER SO HARD AS IT IS TODAY. WITH PLEASURE I LOOK BACK THROUGH THE YEARS, RECALLING THE CROWDS AND ALL THE CHEERS. FOR A FELLOW SO GREAT ENDURANCE UNKNOWN, THE GLORIOUS HONOR BELONGS TO YOU ALONE. IT'S HARD TO SAY QUITS TO THE GRAND OLD GAME, BUT YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED UNQUESTIONABLE FAME. WITH MANY A GREAT RECORD YOU HAVE SET, I AM SURE YOU LEAVE WITH NO REGRET. WHATEVER YOUR FUTURE PLANS MAY BE, ONLY SINCERE WISHES CAN COME FROM ME FOR HAPPINESS, SUCCESS AND THE BEST OF HEALTH TO A FELLOW DESERVING NO GREATER WEALTH. LEO DUROCHER. Gehrig's reply on Lou Gehrig stationary, thanks Durocher and then adds, To the first line of your poem...let me add: And how much pleasure I get now - Watching this rookie grow and grow. Cordially yours, Lou Gehrig . In original envelope. (3)
