Read more Louis Le Brocquy Lot 33 - 'Woman and Bird (1949)' Estimate: €10,000 - €15,000 Having travelled and visited several of Europe's major museums, Louis le Brocquy returned to Ireland in 1940, becoming active in the small though influential arts community in favour of Modernist ideas. He became well known but the RHA rejected his work for its annual exhibitions, a symbolic refusal that led, with the encouragement of his mother, Sybil, to the establishment of a showcase for modern art, The Irish Exhibition of Living Art, with several leading, mostly female painters including Mainie Jellett. In the meantime, le Brocquy moved to London in 1946, the same year he began his series of Traveller paintings, inspired by his experience of the Travelling community and its customs in the west of Ireland. At this point, Picasso's influence was particularly evident in his work. He viewed Travellers not as neglected outsiders but as embodying a complex, vibrant culture. Several important paintings emerged from this period, including Travellers Making Twig Sign in 1946, the outstanding Travelling Woman with Newspaper, 1947-48, and the remarkable Man Creating Bird in 1948. Alistair Smith described the latter as the culmination of the Traveller series. This exuberant, joyous small work, Woman and Bird, is certainly of a piece with the Traveller paintings. The figure of the woman is Picasso-esque and underlines le Brocquy's mastery of Cubism. She reaches upwards but could almost be dreaming the bird that materializes above her in a burst of plumage, like a messenger from the glowing sun high in the sky (le Brocquy recalled a sighting of a kingfisher as a source for Man Creating Bird). The artist's economy of means points to his work of the next decade. Aidan Dunne
