Beschreibung:

Louis XVI Style Gilt-Bronze Mounted Mahogany Commode a Vantaux After the model by Guillaume Benneman and Joseph Stokel, late 19th/early 20th century The white and gray stepped rectangular marble top with rounded front corners, above a conforming case enclosing a pair of frieze drawers over a pair of cupboard doors opening to reveal six sliding drawers, flanked by half-round clustered arrow-form columns, raised on hairy paw and bun feet, decorated on the front with a central oval shield with the head of Medusa, arrow filled quivers, flags and swords, the principal mount stamped KAHN. Height 38 3/8 inches, width 6 feet 1/2 inch, depth 27 inches. The original is in the collection at Fontainebleau Doyle New York sold a similar cabinet Belle Epoque, June 9, 2010, C
the marble top appears to be in generally good condition; there is, however, at least one small area of infilling to the marble, located along the front center lower rim edge, and there is a small vertical crack line in this same area; there are minor nicks and rim chips and light scratches to the top; the two frieze drawers are currently locked and there is no key to open them; the commode appears to retain all of its mounts and the mounts appear to be consistent; there is wear and dulling to the mounts and some of the nails that secure the mounts are missing, protrude or have been replaced; there is some splitting to the case, notably to the interior and exterior sides of the two front doors; the front doors currently open with difficulty will need proper restoration: currently they need to be carefully lifted to open the doors forward and to again close them; there is a long vertical split line and separation along the lower edge of the right facing door, which is only visible on the interior side; the sliding drawers open and close with ease; there is a fair amount of scuffing and some shallow gouge marks around the door edges and rims and throughout the entire case; there is a water or ring mark on the left facing door (visible in the photograph)
