LOW, David (1786-1859). The Breeds of Domestic Animals of the British Islands. London: Longman, Orme, Brown, Green and Longmans, [1840]-1842. 2 volumes in one, 2° (425 x 325mm). Half-titles. 56 FINE HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHED PLATES by W.Nicholson after William Shiels printed by Fairland. (Margins of most plates lightly spotted or soiled.) Contemporary calf gilt, g.e. (rebacked, covers detached). A large copy of a fine work which is 'part of the great English tradition of landscape painting... perhaps the best book of its kind' (Handasyde Buchanan Nature into Art p.145). The plates are reduced from a series of paintings by Shiels (1785-1857) now in the Agricultural Museum of the University of Edinburgh. Nissen ZBI 2564 (calls for 57 plates in error); Wood p.442.
