LOW, David (1786-1859). The Breeds of the Domestic Animals of the British Islands. London: Longman, Orme, Brown, Green and Longmans, [1840]-1842. 2 volumes, 2° (408 x 310mm). 56 FINE HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES by W. Nicholson after William Shiels printed by Fairland. (One plate with imprint slightly shaved, 10 others and a few text leaves with small unobtrusive neatly repaired tears, one text leaf and one plate loosely inserted, occasional light soiling.) Modern green half morocco, spines gilt, by the Edinburgh Bookbinding Company. A fine work which is 'part of the great English tradition of landscape painting... perhaps the best book of its kind' (Handasyde Buchanan Nature into Art p.145). The plates are reduced from a series of paintings by Shiels (1785-1857) now in the Agricultural Museum of the University of Edinburgh. Nissen ZBI 2564 (calls for 57 plates in error); Wood p.442.
