LUCIAN of Samosata (b. c.120 A.D.). Dialogi et alia multa opera [by Philostratus the elder and younger, and Callistratus], in Greek. Venice: Aldine Press, October 1522. 2 (303 x 208mm). Aldine device f6 on title and final verso. 55 lines and pagination. Initial spaces with guide-letter. (One short marginal tear.) 18th-century diced russia-backed marbled boards, flat spine gilt (lightly rubbed, splits in hinges). Provenance : Panepistimou library (stamp and cancellation on first two leaves). Second Aldine edition, significantly better than the 1503 edition. Owing to its textual superiority, this edition served as the basis for numerous later editions. It is the third edition in Greek of Lucian's Dialogues and second edition in Greek of the Philostratean texts and of Callistratus, which accompany the Dialogues. The Philostratean texts are purported descriptons of pictures in a Neapolitan collection, in whose imitation Callistratus wrote his descriptions of 14 statues, also printed here. All three texts are of considerable importance for the study of classical art history. Adams L-1604; Renouard Alde 95:4. RARE. Not in Ahmanson-Murphy.
