LUMISDEN, Andrew. Remarks on the Antiquities of Rome and its Environs; Being a classical and topographical survey of the ruins of that celebrated city . London: by W. Bulmer and Co., and sold by G. Nicol, 1797. 4° (282 x 212mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece and 12 plates and plans, many double page or folding. Extra illustrated with 62 sepia-coloured aquatint plates from J. Merigot's A Select Collection of Views and Ruins in Rome [ca. 1819]. (Occasional browning and offsetting to text.) Contemporary diced russia (rebacked with old spine relaid, inner hinges strengthened), gilt inner dentelles, speckled edges. FIRST EDITION. Andrew Lumisden (1720-1801), secretary to the Young Pretender, fled to the continent after the 1745 Rebellion, and eventually came to reside in Rome, 1749-69; though some travellers distrusted him as a jacobite, he was regarded as a learned and generally helpful contact, particularly for young Scottish artists. His work on Rome was published after he had returned to Scotland. A second edition appeared in 1812. Lowndes observes that the work is "sometimes illustrated with Merigot's views in Rome." Ingamells p. 617; Lowndes IV, p. 1413; Olschki 17435; Pine-Coffin 750 2; Schudt 774. For Merigot, see Abbey Travel 178. HUMPHREYS, Henry Noel. Rome and its surrounding Scenery. Illustrated with engravings by W. B. Cooke . London: Charles Tilt, 1840. 4° (276 x 208mm). Engraved frontispiece and 30 plates by Cooke after David Roberts and others, including double-page panorama (Occasional spotting to plates, panorama slightly split along fold, p. 104 with fragment of paper adhering to text and obscuring 3 letters.) Modern boards backed in green calf. FIRST EDITION. Pine-Coffin 838 5. With 7 other works in 11 volumes, all on antiquities or classical tours. (13)
