LUNAR LANDSCAPE – National Aeronautics and Space Administration Lunar Planning Chart (LOC – 1, 2, 3, and 4). Aeronautical Chart and Information Center of the USAF for NASA, May 1971. Large lunar charts inscribed with mission details by a member of every Apollo landing crew. This set is the largest and most beautiful we have seen produced for NASA during the Apollo program. The lunar features were hand-drawn by mapmakers to depict the proper relief shadowing and subtle colors in great detail. With both hemispheres shown together, one can see the true differences between the smooth, flat areas familiar to us on the near side as compared to the nearly endless craters upon craters over craters on the dark side of the Moon. LOC-2 features the near side viewable from Earth and encompasses all of the Apollo lunar landing sites. A member of each of the six Apollo lunar landing crews has INSCRIBED a description important to him and SIGNED his name and mission number in the area of his landing site. These writings are: 1. "A Dream of Mankind Becomes True! The First Lunar Landing, Apollo XI, Tranquillity Base, Buzz ALDRIN, July 20, 1969." 2. "Ocean of Storms. Second Lunar Landing. Novermber 1969. A Pinpont Landing Next to Surveyor III, Alan BEAN, Apollo 12.” 3. "Fra Mauro Base, Third Lunar Landing, Feb 1971, Apollo 14, Edgar MITCHELL.” 4. "Hadley Base, 4th Landing, July/Aug 1971, Dave SCOTT, Apollo 15.” 5. "Descartes and the Cayley Plains, Fifth Lunar Landing. April 1972, Charles M. DUKE, Jr. Apollo 16." 6. "The Valley of Taurus Littrow. Sixth and Final Apollo Landing. December 1972, Gene CERNAN, Apollo XVII." Lighter linear streaks radiate out from craters including Copernicus and Kepler. All of the large smooth “lunar seas” are shown such as Mare Tranquillitas, Imbrium, Nectaris Serenitatis , and Oceanus Procellarum . Dramatic contrast between light and dark emphasize rugged mountains which surround many of the mare features. Thousands of craters are seen continuously over the four charts with some 1,500 craters identified including the recently named Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins. Numerous long, winding features known as rilles are identified, especially in the mare areas. Four color lithographed maps in Mercator projection, 41.5 by 44.5 inches each. Complete 360° longitudinal coverage with latitudes reaching to 40 degrees North and South. Scale 1:2,750,000 at the equator. Each has an index identifying its location in relation to the other three with additional notes provided on all charts.
