LURIA, Solomon (Maharshal; c. 1510-1574). Miscellany volume of works mainly by Luria and his pupils, including glosses on Sefer Mitsvot Gadol ( Semag ), a super-commentary on Rashi's Pentateuch commentary and two smaller commentaries. MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER [Germany, late 16th century] 4 o (215 x 160 mm). 234 leaves (imperfect, see contents). Modern lead pencil foliation. Brown inks. Ashkenazic semi-cursive scripts, copied by several hands. (First and last leaves with old restorations, some loss of text, severe browning in part of the book, staining, all corners and edges frayed, many with old strengthening which tends to come off the paper, none of this affecting readability.) Modern blind and gold-tooled brown morocco, two modern paper flyleaves at back and front. CONTENTS: I. Fols. 1r-125r: Amudei Shelomo by R. Solomon Luria (Maharshal). Commentary on Moses of Coucy's Sefer Mitsvot Gadol . Incomplete; includes only the portion of the text from Laws of Shabbat to the end of Seder Nashim . Used for variants in the printed edition (Jerusalem 1993). There are two versions of the laws of chamets and many glosses in the margins, some of them from the teachings of R. Isaac Stein. Other manuscript copies of this work are MSS Oxford (Catalogue Neubauer, nos. 868-871); New York, Columbia University X893 L972; and New York, JTS MSS Rab. 1067 and 1086. Fols. 125v-126v: blank. II. Fols. 127r-206r: Super-commentary on Rashi's commentary on the Torah. Incomplete at the beginning; Deuteronomy missing. The anonymous author quotes his teacher Sh"L, and on fol. 165r his teacher in the name of his grandfather Isaac Klober. The author's teacher, then, was R. Solomon Luria, grandson of Isaac Klober. Fol. 206v: see below under Provenance. III. Fols. 207r-220v: Mevo She'arim by Nathan ben Samson Spira of Grodno (d. 1577). Commentary on Sha'arei Dura by Isaac ben Meir of Dueren. There are variants from the printed edition (Lublin 1595; Vinograd, Thesaurus , p. 358, no. 32). With glosses by Israel Isserlein. Partly misbound. Other manuscript copies of this work are MSS Oxford, Opp. 269 and 378, and Cambridge, UL, Dd. 10.14.1. IV. Fols. 221r-234v: Another anonymous commentary on Sha'arei Dura . Beginning and end missing. The latest authority quoted is Israel Isserlein. PROVENANCE: 1. On fol. 206v an owner, or probably one of the scribes, Isaac ben Aaron Eleazar of Miltenberg, wrote a colophon in verse.
