With 15 fine full-page woodcuts designed by BERNARD SALOMON (c. 1508-c. 1561), 16 woodcut criblé, floral and historiated initials, publisher's woodcut device. (Repair to extreme blank corner of title and last leaf, washed.) Late-18th-century red morocco gilt, triple fillet on sides, flat spine lettered and tooled à la grotesque, roll-tooled turn-ins, gilt edges. Provenance : Baron Joseph Double (bookplate, 1897 Paris sale); Louis Lebeuf de Montgermont (1911 Paris sale, lot 101); René Descamps Scrive (bookplate, 1925 Paris sale); Libraririe Thomas-Scheler (sold to Gourary 1955). FIRST EDITION of the first work in the celebrated series of fully illustrated French entrée books, which show the height of Renaissance artistic ingenuity. An Italian edition with the same cuts was published the same year, with the addition of a Florentine comedy performed as part of the festivities. MAURICE SCèVE, assisted by CLAUDE DE TAILLEMONT, GUILLAUME DU CHOUL and BARTHéLEMY ANEAU, had been responsible for the program of the entry into Lyon of HENRI II (1519-1559) and CATHERINE DE MEDICIS (1519-1589), and was commissioned to prepare the official account of the festivities, which were also reported in unauthorized versions. Bernard Salomon called le Petit Bernard, had been the artistic director of the event and no doubt supervised the illustration of this book. The cuts show officials in costume, a decorated obelisk, triumphal arches, architectural perspectives, galleys, etc. The French edition is considerably RARER than the Italian, both in institutions and on the market.
