Collation: [CROSS] 4, engraved portrait of the King, folding etched plate; A-N 4. Roman and italic types, preliminaries printed in red and black, woodcut head-piece and initial. (Short tear in portrait mended.) Jansenist red morocco, gilt edges, bound c. 1900 by Chambolle-Duru. Provenance : Sylvain Brunschwig (bookplate, 1955 Geneva sale, lot 405); Lathrop Harper (sold to Gourary 1955). RARE FIRST EDITION of an account that was quickly reprinted at least once (1598), perhaps twice (Vinet's note on a 1596 folio edition seems unreliable). Following the Edict of Nantes and the Peace of Vervins, the entry of HENRI IV into the city of Lyon gave rise to a reception of unprecedented pomp. He arrived by boat at Vayse, from where the splendid cortège proceeded to Lyon through many decorated arches past countless statues, columns and pyramids. Most of this is depicted on the large unsigned plate, which may have been etched by an Italian artist. It clearly shows the shallow construction of the ceremonial arches, which like stage sets were meant to be viewed in the procession only from the front. The author of the account, the poet Pierre Matthieu, had been in charge of the organization of the festivities and became prominent in the King's retinue as historiographer of the nation.
