LYON 1600 -- MATHIEU, Pierre.
[Lyon]: Thibaud Ancelin, [1600]. 8 o (163 x 105 mm). Engraved folding plate attributed to JEAN PERRISSON (short tear along gutter). Contemporary vellum, paper spine label (some staining to covers, lacking ties). FIRST EDITION in which Mathieu describes the hurry to organize the events surrounding the entrance of MARIE DE MEDICI (1575-1642), Queen of France into the city of Lyon in 3 December 1600. Marie arrived at Marseilles on 3 November and journeyed to Lyon to meet her new husband, Henry IV, King of France. Although the two were married by proxy because Henry was too busy to attend the wedding in Florence in October 1600, the couple did not meet face to face until Marie's arrival in Lyon. In addition to the festivities in honor of her arrival and her introduction to the people of France, a formal wedding ceremony also was celebrated. The plate illustrates Marie's procession into the city and identifies several of the entrances erected in her honor. Graesse IV, 443; Ruggieri 340 (1601 edition with variant title and printer).
