LYON 1660 -- [MENESTRIER, Charles S.J. (1631-1705)]. Les réjouissances de la paix faites dans le ville de Lyon le 20. Mars 1660 . Lyon: Guillaume Barbier and Jacques Justet, 1660.
LYON 1660 -- [MENESTRIER, Charles S.J. (1631-1705)]. Les réjouissances de la paix faites dans le ville de Lyon le 20. Mars 1660 . Lyon: Guillaume Barbier and Jacques Justet, 1660. 2 o (320 x 205 mm). Armorial engraving on title-page, 18 engraved plates representing fireworks by N. AUROUX (one double-page) (some occasional minor browning). Early 20th-century crushed levant morocco gilt, spine in seven compartments gilt-lettered with monograms "VM" and title, gilt coat of arms of Prince d'Essling with his motto "Victor et fidelis" on both sides by Cuzin (some discoloration to covers). Provenance : Victor Massena, Prince d'Essling (1836-1910) (binding); faded ink signature on title-page. A fine description of the festivities held at Lyon on 20 March 1660 in celebration of the Peace of the Pyrenees between Spain and France. Signed in 1659 by LOUIS XIV (1638-1725), King of France, and PHILIP IV (1605-1665), King of Spain, on Pheasant Island, a river island on the border of both countries, the treaty signaled the end of more than ten years of continuous warfare resulting from the hostilities of the Thirty Years' War. The double-page plate shows the procession of notables attending the festivities and the rest of the plates illustrate the elaborate fireworks on the bridge over the Saöne and in each of the 16 quarters of the city. The work concludes with a treatise on the making of fireworks. This present first edition was published without Menestrier's knowledge and without his name on the title-page. A second octavo edition with his name on the title was published later the same year. Berlin Cat. 2999; Brunet III, 1624; Ruggieri 298; Vinet 499.
