An excerpt from his 2 September 1945 address aboard the USS Missouri, at the Japanese surrender ceremonies. 1 page, oblong card. “Military alliances, balances of power, leagues of nations, all in turn failed,” the excerpt begins, “leaving the only path to be by way of the crucible of war. The utter destructiveness of war now blocks out this alternative. We have had our last chance. If we will not devise some greater and more equitable system, our Armageddon will be at our door...” MacArthur came to Japan as Supreme Commander Allied Powers and oversaw the successful, peaceful occupation of the country, which lasted until 1952. Romulo”), as Secretary of Foreign Affairs, to Morris Cotkin, Manila, 9 September 1969. 1 page, 4to, on Secretary of Foreign Affairs stationery. MacArthur’s aide-de-camp recalls a near miss on Corregidor when MacArthur disdained to take cover during a Japanese air raid and “a Filipino sergeant, his orderly, took off his helmet and put it on the General’s head. At that instant, a piece of shrapnel hit the helmet. That quick action of the sergeant saved the General.
