Engraved title by PEDRO VILLAFRANCA, 49 plates (4 folding, 41 of emblems) and 9 engraved vignettes (title shaved slightly at head and foot, folding plates with some splits along folds, a few short tears). (A few intermittent stains.) Contemporary limp vellum. A superbly illustrated description of the funeral for PHILIP IV (1605-1665), King of Spain, which included the magnificent funerary catafalques constructed on the desgins of SEBASTIÁN HERRERA BARNUEVO at the Convento de la Encarnación in Madrid. The King's body was dressed in a musk-coloured velvet suit, embroidered with silver, with a silver sword by his side and a diamond cross in his hands. It was enclosed in silver and red velvet coffins and placed high upon a dais under a canopy illuminated by great wax torches, surrounded with the insignia of imperial majesty and guarded by the halberdiers of Espinosa. Seven altars and scores of lighted tapers were erected in the chamber, and masses for the King's soul were ceaselessly offered. But when the time came for the burial in the Escorial few of the high nobles and officers cared to absent themselves from Madrid and even the bearing of the body to the mule litter gave rise to a hot dispute. The engraved title and one of the folding plates are signed by Pedro Villafranca, one of the leading Spanish engravers of the period. The other plates, though unsigned, appear to be Villafranca's work as well. They include 41 plates of emblems, 4 plates of coats-of-arms, a folding engraved portrait of Philip IV surrounded by grieving allegorical figures, a folding plan of the church, a folding plate of Philip's name and anagrammatic verse and a plate of the catafalque.
