Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) - Letter - an important Gandhi letter, written in Guajarati, which references both Vallabhbhai Patel and his daughter Maniben Patel as well as featuring spiritual teachings: To Shri Nandubahen Dear Sister, The mountains of sorrow are falling on you. I just came to know about the illness of Bhabhi from the letter of Mani. God is taking examinations of yours and doctor’s. Happiness and sorrow are our partners so consider both of them equally and just let them go. But to whom I am giving all this knowledge. It is like go to sell [Illegible] to the Gandhi’s (grocery) shop. How is Doctor? Vallabhbhai was saying that his health/body is not same as before. Write to me after reading. Pune 31/08/30. Blessings from Bapu. Written in black ink to both sides of the small page. Folded. Measures approx; 10cm x 6.5cm. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British Rule, and in turn inspire movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Gandhi's birthday, 2 October, is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Nonviolence. Gandhi is commonly, though not formally, considered the Father of the Nation in India, and was commonly called Bapu (Father). Provenance - from the collection of Dr Balvantrai N. Kanuga, Gandhi's personal long-term physician and friend.
